College Student Code of Conduct Infractions

For many college students, the new found freedom of living away from home can result in poor decision making by the student.  Often students will get in trouble without appreciating the full impact of the long and short term consequences they may face.  For many college students, being charged with a crime puts them in trouble twice: once with the law and once with their university.  Common violations include drug and alcohol arrests, DUI/OVI, criminal mischief, theft, assault, and sexual assault.

Our attorneys have represented students at many of the area Universities and Colleges, including the University of Dayton, Wright State University, Miami University, Wittenberg University and Sinclair Community College.  Even if the student prevails in their criminal case, they may still face disciplinary action from the University, which could include:

  • Expulsion or Suspension from the School;
  • Loss of Financial Aid;
  • Loss of Student Housing;
  • Dismissal from an Athletic Team;
  • Being Denied Transfer or Admission to Another College;
  • Immigration Effects on Student Visa; and
  • Requirement to Repay Past Financial or Housing Assistance.

We strive to protect a student’s criminal record and to achieve a result so that they will not have to explain to potential employers for the rest of their lives.  Criminal charges and alleged violations of codes of student/resident/academic conduct can be devastating to a student who has a bright future to protect.  We try to keep the arrest from appearing on a student’s record by attempting to have the charges dismissed prior to arraignment whenever possible.  Often negotiating an outcome can protect the student’s future.  Sometimes those negotiations include getting the University to agree to keep the violation/offense off the student’s permanent academic record.  In that way, even if the student is ultimately suspended or expelled from school, they are able to enroll in another academic institution without the damaging information on their permanent record.

Below we have listed links to the Student Code of Conduct Handbook for many of our area Universities and Colleges:
