In Ohio if you are charged with a crime, it can be difficult to predict what could happen to you.  That unpredictability is due to the severity of the charges, whether you accept a deal from the prosecutor or proceed to trial, and how any prior convictions you may have are likely to factor into sentencing if you are ultimately found guilty.

Understanding what is likely to happen is crucial to making decisions about your legal defense options.  At Holzfaster, Cecil, McKnight & Mues, an Ohio misdemeanor attorney possesses the knowledge, legal skills, proven track record, and experience to aggressively defend you regardless of the crime you are charged with.

In Ohio, misdemeanors are categorized by degrees of seriousness, with a 1st degree misdemeanor being the most serious and a minor misdemeanor being the least serious.  Often, you will be charged with a higher level of misdemeanor but will end up being offered a deal to plead to a lesser degree misdemeanor.  If you are convicted of a misdemeanor, the Judge will decide on your particular fine and whether you will receive any time in jail.  The following is a list of the different degrees of misdemeanors in Ohio and what the penalty might be for each level of misdemeanor:

M-11st Degree Criminal Misdemeanor:  Punishable by up to 6 months in jail and up to a $1,000.00 fine plus court costs;
M-22nd Degree Criminal Misdemeanor:  Punishable by up to 90 days in jail and up to a $750.00 fine plus court costs;
M-3 3rd Degree Criminal Misdemeanor:  Punishable by up to 60 days in jail and up to a $500.00 fine plus court costs;
M-4 4th Degree Criminal Misdemeanor:  Punishable by up to 30 days in jail and up to a $250.00 fine plus court costs;
M MCriminal Minor Misdemeanor:   Punishable by No Days in jail and up to a $150.00 fine plus court costs.

If you have been charged with a misdemeanor, it is not a minor legal matter.  A conviction can affect your ability to get or keep a job, get or obtain a security clearance if you are in the military, and a conviction can stay on your permanent criminal record for life.  For generations, the attorneys at Holzfaster, Cecil, McKnight & Mues have been aggressively defending individuals throughout Southwest Ohio charged with criminal misdemeanors.
