When local attorney Robert Mues started practicing law 30 years ago, "prenuptial agreements were just starting to be recognized in the U.S.," said Mues. "While the rest of Europe followed suit also enforcing pre-marital contracts when marriages dissolved, English Courts have up until this point treated the 'prenup' as a consideration, but not something binding.
Mues appeared last week on BBC London Radio's "The Big George Show." A landmark ruling in the U.K. regarding prenuptial agreements led the show's producers to seek out an experienced American family law attorney to discuss the possible legal implications to British audiences. An article on the topic posted on the Ohio Family Law Blog -- a resource offered by the Dayton law firm of Holzfaster, Cecil, McKnight and Mues -- caught the station's eye.
The British courts ruled in favor of Katrin Radmacher, a German paper heiress, with assets over $100 million dollars. The appeals court enforced the terms of the prenuptial agreement and cut the $5.8 million dollars previously awarded to Nicolas Granatino to about $1 million dollars.
"While the developments in English law are quite interesting, what I've really taken from the experience is the power of social networking," says Mues. "There is a real need today for around-the-clock on-line information regarding family law and divorce issues. We're responding to that with the Ohio Family Law Blog; and we are on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook."
The recent blog post "Hitting The Airwaves With 'Big George' On The BBC" has a link to the interview as well as other insights on the English case.
