Child Support Payments can be Sent to a Platnium smiONE Visa Debit Card or Direct Bank Deposit

child support smiONEIn Ohio, the Office of Child Support, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, has made electronic disbursements mandatory as a way of processing child support payments.

What exactly is an e-Disbursement? It is when money is electronically transferred from the Ohio Child Support Payment Central to either a debit card with a chip, a magnetic strip credit card, or to a saving and loan bank, or a credit union account. Paper checks are no longer an option, unless the custodial parent can show proof why it is impossible for them to receive funds electronically.

There are two different methods that Ohio has established to receive child support payments. You can either receive the money through direct deposit, or through a Platinum smiONE Visa card. These two methods for receiving child support are offered in order to provide a safer, faster, and simpler way to receive the money. In addition, eliminating mailing paper checks saves the State of Ohio an incredible amount of money!

Child Support Payments: Direct Deposit Vs. Debit Card

Direct Deposit can be used if the custodial parent has an existing bank account, The funds are simply transferred electronically right into the account at either a traditional bank, or to a credit union.

The Platinum smiONE Visa card  does not require the parent to have a bank account. It is a debit card, and once the money is deposited into the debit card, the card can be used to withdraw money at an ATM machine, or at a bank teller window. The debit card can also be used to directly make purchases. So basically the difference between these two methods is that direct deposit requires that there is an existing bank account, while the simONE card does not require an existing account.

If you should elect to receive payment through the debit card method, it is imperative that the county child support agency has your correct mailing address as the post office is prohibited for forwarding them to a different address.

smiONE Debit Card can be Used Anywhere Visa is Accepted

There are several important things to be aware of if you are considering the debit card. It can be used for any purchase where Visa debit cards are accepted. You can withdraw money from any bank, credit union, or ATM machine where the following acceptance marks are displayed:  Allpoint, Fifth Third Bank, Visa, Plus, or Interlink.

If you use an ATM at any Allpoint or Fifth Third Bank, there will not be a withdrawal charge. If you withdraw money from somewhere other than an ATM at Allpoint or at Fifth Third, you will be assessed a $2.50 out of network fee. No fees are charged on purchases however. If you would like to use the smiONE debit card to have your paycheck, or government payments including unemployment benefits, or tax refunds, deposited into it, you can do so. You can either call smiONE customer service, or you can obtain a form online.
