Should You Make Your Health A Priority After A Difficult Divorce?

Men's Health Month divorceDid you know that June is Men’s Health Month? During a difficult separation and divorce, men often do not make their health a priority, however they should. Here are some ideas on how to do that.

Be sure to get enough exercise. It doesn’t mean you have to take out an expensive gym membership. If you do have a gym membership and enjoy it, by all means go. If the gym isn’t your thing there are lots of ways to incorporate exercise into you daily routine. Playing with your kids at the park, going for a walk, doing jumping jacks or push ups, taking the stairs instead of the elevator are just some simple ways to incorporate exercise. Any type of movement will help both your body and mind. Just get moving!

Definitely pay attention to what you are eating. It is easy to resort to fast food because you are busy and it is quick, but try to limit how often you do this. Be mindful of what you are eating, and try not to eat to attempt to relieve stress or frustration which can be at an all-time high when you are going through a divorce. If you typically grab a bag of chips or a candy bar when you are feeling stressed try a healthy alternative and before you know it, you are on the way to establishing a new habit. Not a fun fact, but heart disease is the number one killer of men. Eating a healthy diet of grains, fruits and vegetables helps to prevent heart disease. On the other hand processed food and foods laden with sugar are not heart healthy.

Pamper Yourself For Men’s Health Month

If you have children remember you are their role model. They are watching you and it is important that you lead by example. If you are exercising, eating healthy foods, and engaging your mind in a variety of activities, they are more likely to do the same. When you are going through a divorce  it can be easy to let things go, but your children look up to you so it is important to set a positive example for them.

Be sure to keep up with doctor and dentists appointments. Don’t put off going because you feel too stressed, or don’t want to take the time. It is important to get checkups and screenings. Better to be proactive about your health. If you do have some type of abnormality it is important to catch it early while it can either be prevented or treatable. Don’t be afraid to reach out to professionals to get help. Perhaps you need to seek the advice of a physical trainer to help you with an exercise plan, or maybe a dietician to help you with healthy eating habits. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Sometimes we just need a little help and guidance to maintain healthy bodies and minds.

I believe the majority of men don’t “pamper” themselves. Use the excuse of celebrating Men’s Health Month  to do so. Do something you really enjoy. Take an afternoon off and go golfing. Or maybe go to the library and find a good book, or just take an extra-long nap. Most importantly, and not just for the month of June, focus on your health and staying well to help you throughout the difficulties of a divorce.
