Positive Outlook Key For Post Divorce Happiness?

I get this question a lot when I meet with my divorce clients. While there is no guaranteed correct answer, there are steps you can take to keep you from becoming paralyzed by the divorce process. From reports I hear from my former clients, the answer to this question is usually “yes”!

I am a bit of a geek when it comes to looking at statistics. I recently saw an article on MovingPastDivorce.comabout a survey that Terry Gaspard commissioned. Ever Wonder the Leading Causes for Divorce?

The Main Reason For Marrying Says Divorce Study? It’s Not Love!

According to a study by McKinley Irvin, approximately 42-45% of marriages in the United States end in divorce. The same study also found that 60% of second marriages and 73% of third marriages end in divorce. In 2021, there were 689,308 divorces across the 45 U.S. states that report this statistic. During that same year, 1,985,072 marriages occurred, making the U.S. marriage rate 6 per 1,000 people.

It can be beneficial for a couple to understand the causes for failed marriages. If you are already married it can help you to make your own marriage stronger. If you are about to walk down the aisle it can guide you in making choices about your intended wedding. It can even help you to support other couples in your life that you care about.

A New Study Emphasizes the Important Role Fathers have on the Educational Outcomes of Their Children

Fathers Involvement With Their Children Has A Positive Effect on Educational Outcomes Says Recent UK Study

It goes without saying that parental involvement is crucial for a child’s development as well as their educational growth. A recent study conducted by the University of Leeds in the UK, finds that fathers have “a unique and important effect” on their children’s educational outcomes. The study collected data in a survey of about 5,000 families in the United Kingdom that included both a mother and father. The study was linked to the participants in the study from their early year profile at age 5 and then to the national pupil database at age 7. Click here to read the study.

The study found that when fathers engage in structured interactions such as singing, reading, playing, and drawing with their children before they attend school, it gives an educational advantage to them in their first year of elementary school. The report found that this trend continues as they progress through school. If there is greater involvement at the age of 5 it increases the child’s academic progress at the age of 7. Artemis Center in Dayton Provides Assistance to Victims of Domestic Violence

Recently Jane Keiffer, the executive Director of the Artemis Center in Dayton, shared an informative data sheet created by a past staff member about a “danger and lethality assessment” of cases from 2019-2022. Needless to say, Jane Keiffer and the Artemis Center do a phenomenal job assisting individuals who have been victimized by domestic violence. We are certainly lucky to have the Artemis Center in our community! Here is a link to the Artemis Center website.

What is a Danger and Lethality Assessment?

A “danger and lethality assessment” helps to evaluate the level of danger a victim of intimate partner violence is experiencing on a level-scale of 0 to 7. An Artemis advocate conducting the assessment goes through a 30-factor analysis to determine the level of danger and lethality a victim shows. A level of 0 is where there is no risk of future abuse either physical or sexual, while a level of 7 is where there is a high risk a homicide will occur.

A Historical Perspective of No-Fault Divorce Laws in Ohio

The Pros of a No-Fault Divorce Can Cause Positive Ripple Effects

The 1970s-known for disco, bell bottom jeans, lava lamps, muscle cars, the Brady Bunch, Pong, and the first Concorde commercial flight-but what about divorce? In the 1970s a revolution took place in the United States. Not the British Invasion, but rather a divorce law revolution. In the 1970s alone, 37 states amended or repealed divorce laws, now allowing married couples to divorce under a “no-fault” system. Under the old, “fault-based” scheme, one party would have to be found guilty of adultery, abandonment, physical or emotional abuse, or a protracted separation period (at least 2 years), etc.

Generally, under this scheme, if an individual seeking a divorce could not prove that one of the previously listed grounds for divorce was present, American courts would not grant the divorce. Without evidence proving their partner was engaging in atrocious acts, an individual was forced to remain in their marriage. A policy argument in favor for the sweeping change in divorce laws is that under the prior “fault-based” scheme, individuals who wished to divorce often did so through perjury and falsification of evidence to get around the strict statutory requirements.

New Study: Does Marrying After the Birth of a Child Affect Your Likelihood of Divorce?

Entering marriage without children results in positive marital outcomes according to study

Divorce Study Reveals Surprsing Data on Couples who had a Child Before Getting Married

There is one factor that seems to stand out in divorce cases; in fact, it makes it twice as likelythat a married couple might choose to call it quits. That factor? Couples who had a child before getting married.

A study conducted in 2020 and published by the Journal of Family Psychology found that couples with who had a child prior to marriage got divorced at a rate of 19.1%, as compared to those who entered marriage without a child (9.5%). That’s almost double the rate of divorces!

With both marriage rates and divorce rates down, and with more couples in the United States entering marriages with a child together already, researchers with the American Psychology Association wanted to see how those relationships fared against newlyweds without children in the mix.

“Among couples who entered marriage with a shared biological child (premarital parents), satisfaction levels were lower and communication was less effective, less positive, and more negative than couples entering marriage without children,” the study said.

Study Finds that Same-Sex Weddings have Generated $3.8 billion Over the Last 5 Years

Same-Sex weddings Have Generated Billion in Local and State Economic Activity in U.S. According to Study

It is estimated that there are 513,000 married same-sex couples in the United States. There are 28 United Nations’ member states that recognize the right of same-sex individuals to marry. According to a study released on May 25, 2020 by the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law at UCLA , same-sex weddings have generated $3.8 billion in local and state economic activity in the United States since the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage five years ago this month in Obergefell v. In June 2015, when the Supreme Court issued its decision in Obergefell, there were an estimated 242,000 same-sex married couples in the U.S. The number of married same-sex couples has more than doubled since then. An estimated 513,000 same-sex couples are married as of March 2020. The researchers used data from the government’s American Community Survey.

Researchers found the average cost of a same-sex marriage was $11,000 (compared with $15,000 for heterosexual couples), coming to over $3.2 billion.
